Symmonds out of OTC Elite exhibitions - Olympic Trials - The Register-Guard

Although Nick Symmonds has withdrawn from the men’s 800 meters, Oregon Track Club Elite has three exhibition races scheduled during the 2008 OSAA state high school track and field championships at Hayward Field this week.

The three races are a women’s 1,500 today, a men’s 1,500 on Friday, and a men’s 800 on Saturday.

Each race will start about 1 p.m.

Symmonds, a finalist in the 800 at the 2008 World Indoor Championships, and a two-time U.S. outdoor runner-up, is recovering from a deep cut on his right knee that required 12 stitches to close.

He was spiked while attempting to hurdle a fallen runner in the 1,500 at Sunday’s adidas Track Classic in Carson, Calif. On Monday, doctors advised Symmonds to take a break from running for a minimum of three to four days.

“The knee feels fine,” Symmonds said. “I could go out and run 15 miles, but every time I bend the knee, there’s a chance of breaking it open again, and if the knee gets infected, I’m out for a month. That’s the biggest worry.”

Symmonds said he will be examined again today.
