Donaghu takes final curtain call at state

Oregon State Meet Highlights

Ella Donaghu of Grant (Portland) won the 800 and the 1,500 for the second straight year at the OSAA 6A Championships at Hayward Field on Saturday.

That was the easy part.

The hard part was winning the 4x400 relay after taking second twice and third once in the past three years. Oregon's all-time distance running queen gunned passed Jesuit's Chloe Jensen with 300 meters to go and then fought tooth and nail down the final home stretch to keep her team in front.

"I told myself there's no way she's going past me and I just ran as hard as I could," Donaghu said.

The win gave Donaghu a 10th straight championship. She won nine individual titles, including three in cross country.

Her teammates didn't have any doubt, despite a somewhat wobbly finish.

"Ella's insane," Cassin Wright said. "She always pulls through every single time."

Jesuit, however, took home the overall hardware by racking up 65 points. The Crusaders' Metro League rival Sunset was second with 49 points and Grant was third with 47.

Sheldon of Eugene won the 4x400 relay in 3:19.16 to cap its Classs 6A boys team title. The Irish scored 78.5 points and got contributions across the board, from Jackson Mestler to the sprint crew.

Harrison Schrage of Grant scored 36 of his team's 42 points -- taking the long and triple jumps to go with second place in the 100 and 200.

The boys 6A 1,500 meters was a show-stopper. Six runners went under 3:55 and Roman Ollar of West Linn held off Mestler 3:51.30 to 3:51.42. Junior Ahmed Muhumed of West Salem ran 3:52.44 for third.

The Summit girls of Bend scored an incredible total of 190 points to win their 10th straight Class 5A title. Summit has an unchallenged run since the OSAA reclassified after 2006 and the Storm will soon join 6A. Cross-town rival Bend High was second with 89.5 points.

Hood River Valled scored 70 points to hold off Marist and win the Class 5A boys title.

In Class 4A, the Astoria girls scored 109.5 points to win the team title. Henley scored 83.5 points to take the boys crown.

- Schrage of Grant won his fourth consecutive Class 6A long jump on Friday, becoming the first boy to win four straight at the school's largest classification in any event. However, he missed a chance to break Jordan Kent's all-time state record with a scratched attempt that went well beyond 25 feet.

- Sebastian Barajas of Hood River Valley completed a four-year sweep of the Class 5A boys discus with 199-10. That's the third-best mark in Oregon history behind national record holder Ryan Crouser and his cousin, Sam Crouser. The Crousers are both current NCAA title holders (Ryan in the shot put, Sam in the javelin). UPDATE -- After conferring with officials it was determined that there was no valid reason for a second measurement and the 200-0 mark was allowed to stand as official.

Small Schools -

- The Joseph girls won the Class 1A championship by one point (70-69) thanks to a victory in the 4x400 relay. Joseph ran 4:22.19 to win the last event; runner-up Griswold placed third in 4:22.90 to come up a little bit short. Freshman Haley Miller spearheaded Joseph's effort with wins in the 800 meters and the 1,500.

- Twins Reagan and Bryson Shira and Wes White were the big dogs for Adrian as the school from far Eastern Oregon won the boys 1A title with 90 points. A convincing win in the 4x400 relay (3:27.69) put a stamp on the title.

- Grant Union always score big in the horizontal jumps thanks to coach John Houk. They held on to win the 2A girls team title, sweating out the last couple of events, with 86.5 points. East Linn Christian scored 86 points, including the 4x400 relay. Grant Union pulled 34 points out of the long and triple jumps alone.
